Movie review by Sandhya Makwana

THIS IS one of those films that will leave you a little befuddled if you are not familiar with theDark Shadows TV series which was aired in the US in the late 1960s i think so.

Tim Burton has essentially turned a soap opera into a movie, and there is even potential for a sequel.

The story begins in 1752 when the Collins family moves from Liverpool, to America where they build their fortune in a town named after them called Collin sport.

Johnny Depp is the object of his servant a brilliant Eva Green obsession. When she learns that he does not love her, she uses witchcraft to take away all the people he loves, including the love of his life, Bella Heathcote.

Almost 200 years later in 1972, some construction workers unwittingly set Barnabas free. He makes his way to his family manor only to discover it has fallen into disarray and his descendants, led by matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer), are desperately trying to keep things afloat.

Elizabeth lives in the manor with her rebellious daughter Carolyn (a funny Chloe Moretz), nephew David Collins (Gulliver McGrath), Elizabeth’s brother Roger (a bland Johnny Lee Miller), David’s psychiatrist Dr Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter) and caretaker Willie Loomis (Jackie Earle Haley).

Barnabas helps to revive his family fortune but must contend with Angelique, who is now the most powerful woman in town as well as his feelings for the family nanny, the mysterious Victoria (Bella Heathcote again), who looks like his Josette.

The movie has many comical moments especially when Barnabas comments on the new things he sees and experiences around him.

However, there are many holes in the plot and there are times when it seems to be heading nowhere.

Overall, watching this movie is a good way to pass time if you are not too fussy.
