Experts talk on media issues-SRM University,International Seminar on Regulating the Media?

Balanced reporting and presentation of news in a manner that would improve the lives of the people in general and consumers of news in particular are needed today, speakers at the inaugural of a two-day seminar said here on Wednesday
The seminar ‘Regulating the Media?' was organised by Young Journalists Association, School of Media Studies and School of Government and International Affairs of SRM University, in association with the United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF), The Hindu and the Indo-Japan Chamber of Commerce.
In her theme address, Srividya Raghavan, Professor of Law, Oklahoma, U.S., said a majority of news organisations, especially television and radio channels were controlled by giant companies in the U.S. Sadly, the trend of consolidation of unregulated media was happening in India too, she observed.
The challenge before the media was two-fold — finding out what the readers' expectations were and how these expectations could be met, experts said. In a hurry to meet such expectations, the media began “pandering to the masses.” Naming a couple of newspapers, she said she was appalled to find highly objectionable news reports and photos in their sports section.
Ms. Raghavan further added that politicians and their political parties started television channels and in such media houses, objective reporting would be a casualty.
Nirmala Lakshman, Director, Kasturi and Sons, said the media had to introspect on its role as a good news operator in the society. “The media plays a vital role as a tool of empowerment for the citizen to pursue a better quality of life,” Dr. Lakshman said. She regretted that issues like paid news and private treaties with companies for equity stakes had brought down credibility to an all-time low.
In her address, Jennnifer McIntyre, Consul General for the U.S. in Chennai, said press freedom was an idea common to both India and United States. Speaking on the occasion, Ravi Panchamoothoo, Chairman of SRM Group of Educational Institutions, said, media should give more space for positive news over negative content. Coming down heavily on sensationalism, he said it should not be the top priority and media houses should think seriously about reducing bad content.

Future of Simulation at SRM

Future of Simulation at SRM

Saving Lives Through Simulation

Dr. Charles. N. Pozner, Medical Director, Neil and Wallace delivered a lecture on "Future of Simulation at SRM" at the SRM Medical College Hospital Seminar Hall on April 12, 2012. Appreciating the management for constant support of resources, he explained that many transformations happened since the inception of the idea to set up a simulation center in 2008 to the inauguration of the center during the Indian Science Congress, ISC 2011.
Understanding the importance of simulation in medical education, he stated that simulation education is mandated in many international institutions like the American Board of Anaesthesia. He congratulated SRM University for having included the simulation based training as a part of the MBBS course. "This is the first Indian Institution to train the MBBS graduates with Basic Life Support and Advance Life Support courses", he added.
Dr. Pozner also expressed his concern that the health care providers across the world should understand the need for simulation education for increased professional satisfaction. He explained that training with mannequins would definitely help to enhance the knowledge, decision making skills and team work.
Medical Practitioners like other professionals need to work collaboratively and the simulation center is indeed a predictable place to teach and learn best clinical practices. Dr. Pozner maintained that simulation education would definitely help to bridge the gap between the actual competency and perceived competency of the practitioners.
He said he is happy with the functions of the SRM Stratus Simulation Center and he also suggested that all the departments of the College of Medicine should utilise the resources available in the simulation center. Dr. Pozner also lauded the initiative of SRM Simulation Center of training the nonmedical community like fire service professionals. He made a humorous comment that simulation based medical education is really a better alternative to hours of lousy lectures. His guest lecture was followed by an interactive question and answer session.
Dr. P. Thangaraju, Pro Vice Chancellor, (Medical), Dr. K. Gireesh, Deputy Dean and Vice Principal, Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed Khan, Medical Superintendent felicitated the occasion with their august presence. ), Dr. K. Gireesh, Deputy Dean said that field work is the path to success and is the power of medical education. Dr. K. Anjalakshi, Head of the Department, Obstetrics and Gyanaecology delivered the vote of thanks.

Campus adda -SRM

SRM University
Java Green: With a variety of food courts, it is a place where everything from committee meetings to birthday parties happen. Located in the annex campus of the university, it is frequented by students throughout the day. This is the place to be if you want updates on campus happenings.
Medical Canteen: Though canteens are common in all colleges and SRM has many, it is the “Medical canteen” that stands out. The crowd mostly comes in only after 9.00 p.m., when all other places are closed and the late nighters — well, almost everyone who has an assignment or record to submit the next day — come in hungry for some food and a break from work. It is during exams that the place comes alive with every one doing one night preparation over some Maggi and Coke.

Vijay leads SRM to title glory

H. Ameerudeen of SRM University proved that his wonder goal against ICF on Sunday was no flash in the pan as he followed it up with yet another stupendous all-round performance to help his team to a 1-0 win over Sathyabama University in the final of the inter-college football tournament on Tuesday.
If one had to find fault with SRM, it was that they horrendously failed to translate all their dominance in possession to goals.
SRM could well have put the tie to bed in the first-half as forward Ameerudeen orchestrated a few top-notch passes to his partner in crime Mijo Jose but to give credit where it's due, Sathyabama’s goal-keeper T.G. Rajguru was equal to the task and repeatedly thwarted their attempts to keep the margin of defeat to a respectable 1-0.
Chances, though, were at a premium at both ends of the pitch and gradually as the match wore on SRM took a stranglehold on their opponents. Ameerudeen’s presence in the middle was certainly an ace up SRM’s sleeve and it was a delight to watch him in all his glory.
Sathyabama did well to go into the break without conceding a goal. But they got off to the worst possible start in the second-half as SRM mid-fielder A. Vijaya Prabhakran made a dazzling run on the left flank after being released by a perceptive pass from S. Karthick.
This time however, Rajguru didn’t stand any chance to prevent SRM from taking a well-deserved lead in the 47th minute. Sathyabama still had ample time on their hands to rebound but the watertight defence of SRM nipped all their offensive forays in the bud to earn a memorable win.
The winners were awarded `25,000. SNJ distilleries owner SN Jayamurugan gave away the prizes.
